Wingstop Awards Final $1000 Scholarship of 2013 to Outstanding DeSoto High School Athlete
Wingstop announces Sergio Phillips as May High School Scholar Athlete of the month
RICHARDSON, Texas - Wingstop's High School Scholar Athlete of the Month program continues encouraging D-FW area high school athletes to take flight. To finish up the school year, DeSoto High School Senior, Sergio Phillips, was named Wingstop's May Scholar Athlete.
Phillips graduated from DeSoto High School with a 3.0 GPA and will be attending San Diego State in the fall. He plans on majoring in Criminal Justice and later putting his leadership skills to work as a SWAT team member. Phillips was a Senior Offensive Lineman on the DeSoto High football team as well as a star on the track field.
In addition to his success on the field and in the classroom, Phillips dedicated much of his free time to bettering his community by volunteering and encouraging others to spend time with under privileged-youth. He coached sports teams, was a youth group leader at his church and served as a mentor to younger kids in Desoto.
"Sergio is the kind of man that we want younger kids to look up to and emulate," said DeSoto High football coach, Claude Mathis. "He exemplified himself as a person and has been one of the best leaders and role models for the youth of Desoto that I have ever seen."
The Wingstop D-FW advertising co-op, which is made up of more than 75 restaurants throughout the area, launched the scholarship initiative for student athletes in the Metroplex area in January 2012. Wingstop has partnered with KTVT-TV CBS and invites viewers, athletic directors, coaches and members of the community to nominate student athletes as recipients of Wingstop's $1000 scholarship, awarded monthly throughout the school year.
"Wingstop's High School Scholar Athlete of the Month program is our way of giving back to our community and honoring the most talented, hard-working young people from the DFW-area," said Rex Heckelman, president of the Wingstop D-FW Advertising Co-op. "Phillips is an outstanding role model for younger students, and we couldn't be happier to recognize the impact he has made as a student and an athlete over the past four years."
Nominations for Scholar Athlete of the Month will resume for the 2013 - 2014 school year in August.
